Vets Round 3

It was the third game of current cricket season, Olinda was playing away game against Wantirna South. The location was perfect and the ground was true Oval with the very fast out-field.

Before this game, expectation of the players’ attendance was very high. Everybody was imagining 12 to 13 players including our favorite Steve Duckworth but at the time of toss Olinda had only 7 players on the ground (here we will say, Ducky we love you and we miss you. We would like to see you in the next games).

Skipper won the toss and decided to bat first and obviously it was the right decision and also to know about the ground and condition. At this point skipper was looking for the best opener so his eyes were roaming around and stuck on one guy who stood-up like a true soldier to start the innings with him (Kiwi man never let anyone down).

Taylor and Fraser started the inning with the positive attitude.

Olinda began well and was looking very promising to give a good score. Fraser came back to pavilion at the score of 9  (2 fours). Bolam joined Taylor to create a good partnership. As usual these two key players were hitting all over the ground and scored 38 (6 fours) and 37 runs (5 fours) respectively. This was the outstanding partnership of the game which supported the team in the form of quick runs and also laid the solid foundation for Olinda.

Shaun and Kieren continued the thrashing of opposition with their solid batting techniques. When Shaun and Kieren were batting, opposition was totally under pressure. This was a true building up of game and getting control of it. Shaun made very important 12 runs (2 fours) while our “Special K’ remain unbeaten third time in a row. He retired by scoring 40 very significant runs (6 fours), awesome batting performance by Kieren.

It was very delighting to watch Olinda batting in this game. Gawronski and Meadows further added valuable quick runs. Gawronski scored 23 runs (3 fours). David Meadows with his stylish left handed batting reminded us of Matthew Hayden. His 3 fours in a row gave us most cheering of the game. Meadows scored valuable 26 runs (4 fours).

At the end Ali and KB added further valuable runs; both scored 5 and 4 respectively and took the total to 219 runs.

Wantirna South got the target of 220 runs in 36 overs to win this game. KB started the bowling with a new ball. On the very first ball, opening batsman hit it very nicely for four and very second ball he hit nicely for two runs. Very quickly they showed us that they are batting with a set plan to achieve this mammoth target. On the third ball  wicket keeper Derick came with the strategy, Derick came closer to the wicket which made batsman to come in the crease resulted miss-timed the shot. Mark Cleeman availed the opportunity to grab a very difficult catch.

Second attack with the new ball was bowled by Ali. Both KB and Ali bowled very well, restricted the opposition to remain below the required run rate. In the 6 over spell, both bowlers gave 24 and 32 runs respectively.

Fraser and Bolam did the bowling next. Both restricted the opposition to the minimum. Both got 1 wicket each and gave 20 and 18 runs in their 6 over spell.

Kieren and Gawronski bowled the last twelve overs. At this point Wantirna south tried to get the target but it was too late to achieve the required run rate. Kieren and Gawronski restricted them to achieve the required run rate. In 6 overs, kieren gave 16 runs while Gawronski gave 27 runs. Both got 1 wicket.

It was one of the best fielding performances by Olinda.  Throughout the game, it was one of the best wickets keeping performance showed by Derick. Shaun was also pretty solid in the field which definitely saved many runs.

Due to the team work Olinda was able to restrict Wantirna South to 144 runs in 36 overs. Among all the best performers, again Kieren was standing out and given man of the match.

Olinda will take this winning spirit to their next games and perform even better.
