Please find match report for Sunday 28th October Vets Div 3, Olinda V’s Ferntree Gully at Home:
Firstly the weather was kind to us old guys, sunny but cool, which generally means most of us will make it to the end of the match, but not conclusively!!!
Olinda went into bat and started off pretty solidly with Choco & Fizz opening, Choc unfortunately out for a quick 6 run total, bringing in the one and only (Silky Giddens) to the crease, (not sure where this nick name came from), to join Fizz who made a solid 21 helping to stabilise things for a while, Col chipping in with a solid and prolific 15 runs again adding some stability to the top order.
After Silky, Chopper, Col, Giddo, (whatever his name is) was bowled out, in came Pete Bolam contributing a very solid & ‘fiery’ 40 runs, well done Pete! Shaun Boylan then saunters to the crease to contribute another important 12 runs until he was trapped LBW. With pressure mounting, we needed another big innings & Kieran Kemm delivered a very special 43 to retire and put Olinda in a strong position. We then lost the next 3 wickets of Ian Fraser (6), Braddles (1), KB (3) for 14 runs & Ali (not out 4) and Cleemo didn’t have to bat, but we had amassed a good overall total of 183, a good solid number to defend……..or so we thought!
After a nice afternoon tea (thanks to all that brought along some great food), it was back out there to defend the defendable!
In comes KB to bowl is medium pacers that always seem to do the job somehow, he constantly deceives the batsmen with his outswingers, inswingers, flippers, and around the wicket googlies and anything else that he can muster up, he finished up with 1 wicket off 6 overs for 26 runs, a good effort KB! Also 2 wickets to Pete Bolan (well done with Bat & Ball Pete) you delivered when we really needed it, also 1 to Kieren Kemm & 1 to Silky (Col), a good solid effort by all with the ball…….even Cleemo contributed with the ball, however the contribution was to the opposition, not to Olinda, far more practice in the nets required before the next game!
A good effort from the Bloods but it was the one that got away, as a team we felt we should have won it, we had a good defendable score, however as can happen sometimes in the fickle game of cricket, the one you believe you can win, can slip away………..
Ferntree Gully finished up with 5 for 185 and beat our score of 183 in the last over with balls to spare, it was close but no chocolates this time for the Olinda Vets Div 3 Team……..but as they say “There’s always the next game”.
We have a great Team, and great comradery & friendships have been formed within this Team & amongst the whole Vets boys over the years, we just need to settle into the season and have a better crack on Sunday 11th November, the game is at Walker Reserve in Wantirna South, please be there by 11.30am, and remember it is Remembrance Day that day and we will have a minutes silence before the start of the game.
Cheers to all & Go Bloods!
Mark (Cleemo) Cleeman.
